Katie’s story: How I overcame emotional eating and bingeing

When women first approach me for help with their relationship with food and body, binge eating, or ending their never-ending cycle of dieting, they often hold a mindset that deep down they will never be able to overcome their challenges. And yet I see people turning their lives around all the time. I know it can be achieved with the right support. This week I thought I’d share Katie’s inspirational journey with you.

Katie was in her early 30’s, when she started a weekly programme with me – a professional, bright, working women - however her relationship with food and her body was preventing her from properly living her life. She felt very lost and was yearning to create change in her life.

Katie felt overweight but overall was desperate to build a healthy relationship with food. She enjoyed food but ultimately would eat large amounts in a short space of time – often eating until she was in severe pain.

Katie described herself as ‘never skinny but not overweight’ as a child. She ate well at home but as a teenager gained the freedom to buy junk food with her pocket money. This wasn’t a problem in itself however she began to gain weight and gradually became ‘obsessed with food body shape and weight’. She thought about food all day long.

As a result of overeating, she suffered with frequent stomach upsets, bloating and heart burn – She felt her skin was bad, had poor sleep and low energy.

Katie was extremely distressed by her regular eating binges – often, choosing takeaways over her home cooked meals.

Katie has a competitive spirit and has always been successful in her studies and career.

Now she felt like a failure - from the outside she appeared to be an attractive, happy, successful woman in her prime but inside lacking in confidence – her self-worth completely tied up with her weight and shape.

She felt she was constantly being judged by everyone and was longing to be free from her critical inner voice.

She had tried all manner of diets -admitting that she had managed significant weight loss quickly on them in the past -but it was never enough. She was never happy with herself and soon regained the lost weight and more.

We started to work with gentle nutrition support adding in the foods lacking in her diet to help Katie’s physiology and she began to eat regular meals.

We worked on her mindset around her body image, food and dieting and she worked hard to relearn how to interpret her, hunger satiety and fullness cues.

As each week passed, Katie was able to chip away at those diet misconceptions and learn to value herself, whilst providing her body and mind with the nourishment she needed. With support and coaching, she discovered her emotional eating triggers and how to consciously work on how best to do things differently.

As she began to value herself, the more she engaged in self-care; prepping her meals ready for her long busy days at work, taking gentle exercise and ensuring that relaxation and ‘me time’ was built into her day. Katie began to master mindful eating, take pleasure from her food and be kind to herself.

As we neared the end of her programme, Katie noticed that her skin felt better, she had more energy, and her digestive system was working normally without bloating and gas. Her sleep felt deeper, and her mood had stabilised.

She said at the time “I’m now not thinking about food in an obsessional way – it used to be - 24/7! I’m no longer putting pressure on my-self- I’m proud of myself, I’m capable of whatever I set out to achieve.

I have realised working from with you that I need to eat well to feel better overall. It has taught me that doing a restrictive diet purely to lose weight has not made me feel better and has had no benefit on my health physically or mentally"

Katie is not unique (and I don’t mean that in a rude way!) -many women have overcome these challenges. The method works, the support is here, and YOU are worthy of it.  It is 100% possible for you to be able to transform your life.
