Is Weight Loss Really What You Want?
Most of us have spent years believing that a smaller body will solve our problems. But if you pause and ask yourself why you want to lose weight, you may discover something surprising.
When you peel back the layers, you might find that your true motivation has very little to do with the number on the scales.
At first, the answers seem obvious.
"I want to fit into my old clothes."
"I want to look better in photos."
"I want to look slim for the beach."
But if you challenge yourself to dig deeper, you may discover that your true motivation has very little to do with weight.
Because for most people, what they're really searching for isn't weight loss per say, it's what they believe weight loss will give them.
What is your real 'why'?
Is it your health?
If improving your health is your goal, remember that many aspects of health can improve without changing your weight.
Eating nourishing meals, getting enough sleep, managing stress, building strength and moving your body regularly all create meaningful changes inside your body. Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, energy levels, fitness and mental wellbeing can all improve, regardless of what the scales say.
Despite what diet culture tells us, health isn't always determined by body size.
I've worked with many people in smaller bodies who are struggling physically and emotionally, while others in larger bodies have excellent blood markers, good fitness and vibrant health.
Health is built through behaviours, not simply by becoming smaller.
Is it happiness?
Many people believe:
"I'll be happy when I lose weight."
But pause for a moment.
Have you ever been thinner than you are now?
If the answer is yes, were you genuinely happier?
For many people, the answer is no.
Because happiness doesn't automatically come with a lower number on the scales.
What else was happening then?
Perhaps you remember a time when you were in a smaller body and life felt easier.
But ask yourself:
What else was different?
Were you in a loving relationship?
Did you enjoy your job?
Were you less stressed?
Were you younger, sleeping better or carrying fewer responsibilities?
Often it's these circumstances, not the size of your body, that made life feel better.
What do you actually want?
Keep digging.
Maybe what you're really searching for is:
Freedom from obsessing about food.
To stop feeling guilty every time you eat.
More confidence.
More energy.
Better health.
Peace in your own body.
Safety, a sense of belonging and to feel accepted
To feel worthy and enough
Has dieting ever given you those things?
This is perhaps the most important question of all.
If years, or decades of dieting have left you feeling exhausted, preoccupied with food, disconnected from your body and constantly believing you're failing...
Is it possible that the problem isn't you?
Is it possible you've simply been chasing the wrong solution?
Whether it's the latest diet, wellness trend or even a weight loss medication, it's worth asking yourself the same question:
Will this actually give me what I truly want?
Because if what you're really seeking is confidence, freedom, health and peace, the path there may look very different from another attempt to shrink your body.
And when you start building a life around these things, you stop living for your next target weight and start living your life today.
So here's my challenge for you.
The next time you catch yourself saying, "I just need to lose weight," pause and ask yourself one simple question:
"What do I believe losing weight will give me?"
Keep asking why until you can't go any deeper.
The answer you find there might just change everything.
Understanding your real “why” is the first step towards creating lasting change. But knowing what you want is only part of the journey.
