My tip picks for June
I’m regularly asked for recommendations on nutrition and lifestyle related books, programmes, food, recipes, podcasts and kitchen gadgets etc, so thought it would be helpful to share some of the things I’m loving with you every month. I would love to hear what you think and if there’s something you are enjoying too – do hit reply and let me know!
WHAT I’M EATING……
It’s British tomato fortnight and the beginning of the great British tomato growing season!
The humble tomato is rich in so many nutrients; vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, and natural pigments. They are known for containing the anti-cancer antioxidant, lycopene and unlike many nutrients, absorption of lycopene is increased when tomatoes are cooked. This can be enhanced with a drizzle of olive oil.
To enjoy your tomatoes, combine with onions and chilli for a quick salsa dip, add to stews and soups or blitz into a cooling gazpacho. I personally love eating tomatoes with almost everything and when the sun is out there is nothing tastier (in my opinion) than combining sweet, ripened tomatoes with feta cheese, leafy greens, avocado, olives and red onion!
WHAT I’VE BEEN WORKING ON……
I’ve recently created a fantastic 12-page guide to help you learn how to conquer your cravings and discover the secrets to eating the foods you crave in moderation as part of a balanced diet. I’ve received feedback from within my community that this is something many of you struggle with on a daily basis and this is something I spend a great deal of time on with many of my clients.
So, if you can’t seem to get through the day without coffee, chocolate, sugar, or processed ‘treat’ foods, every day can feel like a bit of a hamster wheel. If you want to step off – and to conquer your cravings for good – you need to address the physical, emotional, habitual and psychological aspects that lead to cravings. It takes a little work but once you understand roughly how food works in the body, you will be able to stop the physical need for treats, and you can start looking at creating healthier habits around treat foods.
My goal was to create a practical, valuable resource that you can get started with straight away. What’s more, its free! You can access your copy HERE
A QUOTE I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT……
“The greatest damage done by neglect, trauma or emotional loss is not the immediate pain they inflict but the long-term distortions they induce in the way a developing child will continue to interpret the world and her situation in it. All too often these ill-conditioned implicit beliefs become self-fulfilling prophecies in our lives. We create meanings from our unconscious interpretation of early events, and then we forge our present experiences from the meaning we’ve created. Unwittingly, we write the story of our future from narratives based on the past...
Mindful awareness can bring into consciousness those hidden, past-based perspectives so that they no longer frame our worldview. ’Choice begins the moment you disidentify from the mind and its conditioned patterns, the moment you become present…Until you reach that point, you are unconscious.’ …In present awareness we are liberated from the past.”
Gabor Maté,
Mind work – i.e. observing our behaviours and thought patterns( without judgement) , is an integral part of the work that I do with my clients to help them overcome binging, emotional eating and yo-yo dieting
